Benchmarking in Montgomery County, Maryland

Energy Benchmarking is the process of tracking a building’s annual energy use and using a standard metric to compare the building’s performance against past performance and against its peers nationwide. Benchmarking improves our understanding of energy consumption patterns; helps identify energy saving opportunities within a portfolio of buildings; and manages business bottom line through consistent data collection and tracking.

About Montgomery County

Montgomery County, Maryland has recently mandated benchmarking for all owners of non-residential buildings 50,000 square feet and up to 250,000 square feet. Information must be uploaded into the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager®, and reported to the county for public disclosure. Limited exemptions and waivers are available and require the submission of a form.
Montgomery County is a suburb of Washington, D.C. and is home to numerous cities, including Bethesda, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Rockville, and Silver Spring.

Why Benchmark?

Studies have found that benchmarking saves about 7 percent of energy use for buildings that obtain an EPA Energy Star score, which is the measurement all U.S. benchmarking programs use. Benchmarking is particularly helpful for older buildings as it can help pinpoint wasted energy, such as lights or heating systems left on 24 hours a day. Additionally, benchmarking is mandatory and the failure to timely submit data by the June 1st deadline will result in substantial fines.
