New Jersey Clean Energy Program

Many states now encourage property owners to voluntarily measure their energy and water consumption, and report usage to their cities through ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager®, the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) online tool. Portfolio Manager serves as a mechanism to measure energy performance of a single building over time, relative to other similar buildings. The state of New Jersey has implemented such a program, leveraging Energy Star tools.

Clean Energy Program

New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program (NJCEP) promotes increased energy efficiency and the use of clean, renewable sources of energy including solar, wind, geothermal, and sustainable biomass. As a result of this program, New Jersey has realized a stronger economy, less pollution, lower costs, and reduced demand for electricity. NJCEP offers financial incentives, programs, and services for residential, commercial, and municipal customers.

New Jersey’s Pay for Performance program provides incentives for comprehensive, whole-building energy improvements for both existing buildings and new construction. This program offers participants the opportunity to improve overall energy consumption in existing facilities and helps design efficient buildings for new construction.

The Existing Buildings component is designed for commercial and industrial buildings with a peak demand in excess of 200 kWh in any of the preceding twelve months, and 100 kWh for select multi-family buildings. Businesses can save 15% or more on energy consumption in their buildings.

The New Construction component is designed for new commercial, industrial, and multi-family buildings with 50,000 square feet or more of planned space, as well as buildings undergoing substantial renovation. Companies who construct their buildings to perform better than code compliant buildings will be eligible to receive incentives.
